Why spend tools can’t run your supply chain

Coupa, Concur and Tipalti manage money. Your goods need an execution layer. Here’s the gap — and why Indian CPG feels it most.

Every Indian FMCG brand we meet has a familiar stack: a spend tool for approvals, a payments tool for AP, a spreadsheet for stock, and a separate utility bolted on for GST. Each does its job. None of them runs the goods.

That gap — between buying something and getting it on a quick-commerce shelf, compliantly — is where margin and time quietly leak.

Spend is not execution

Tools like Coupa, SAP Concur, Tipalti and Procurify are excellent at what they do: managing spend and accounts payable. But they stop at the supplier handshake. They don't:

  • Receive goods against a PO and write stock
  • Allocate inventory across warehouses and dark-store DCs
  • Pick, pack and dispatch with batch and expiry discipline
  • Generate an IRN and e-way bill at the moment of dispatch

If your "supply chain software" never touches a physical unit of stock, it's a finance tool. That's fine — but it's not running your supply chain.

The discovery and source-to-pay gap

Two other categories get close and still fall short:

  1. Discovery networks help you find suppliers, then hand off. There's no execution.
  2. Enterprise source-to-pay (GEP, Ivalua, Jaggaer, Zycus) is powerful, but stops at the supplier handshake — and none of it does Indian GST natively.

What an execution layer actually does

StageWhat it must do
ProcurePO → approval → GRN that writes stock
StoreEvent-sourced positions, batch & expiry
AllocateRight stock to the right channel/DC
DispatchPick, invoice, e-way bill — in minutes
ComplyIRN + signed QR, state-code-aware tax

This is the layer Easy Procure owns: from the PO all the way to the quick-commerce shelf, with compliance generated as part of the dispatch rather than reconciled after it.

Why India feels it most

Indian CPG sells across Blinkit, Zepto, Instamart, marketplaces and trade — each with its own pricing, timing and paperwork. Layer GST e-invoicing on top, and the cost of stitching tools together compounds fast. One system from PO to shelf isn't a luxury here; it's how you stay fast and penalty-free.
